Unlike linear regulators, switching regulators can step voltage up or down while minimizing power loss as heat. Common topologies include buck (step-down), boost (step-up), and buck-boost converters, each optimized for specific voltage conversion requirements. Modern switching regulators integrate features like synchronous rectification, adaptive frequency control, and protection circuits for overcurrent thermal and undervoltage conditions.
